Description
Zcore™ Expand is a plug-shaped collagen-enriched porcine xenograft designed for socket and defect augmentation. Supplied as a compressed graft sponge, it hydrates and expands immediately when exposed to blood or sterile saline, allowing the material to conform to the geometry of the surgical site.
The graft combines osteoconductive porcine cancellous bone particles with expandable porcine collagen, creating a scaffold that stabilizes the graft while maximizing space for new bone formation. Once hydrated, Zcore™ Expand increases in diameter and fills void spaces in extraction sockets or sinus defects without requiring loose particulate packing.
This expansion capability makes the graft particularly useful in extraction site preservation and sinus augmentation procedures, where rapid adaptation to irregular defects improves handling and defect fill.
Composition and Structure
Zcore™ Expand is a composite graft material consisting of:
80% porcine xenograft particulate
20% expandable porcine collagen
The xenograft particles feature an interconnected macroscopic and microscopic porous architecture derived from porcine cancellous bone, supporting vascular infiltration and bone ingrowth during the regenerative process. The collagen component acts as a hydratable carrier matrix, allowing the compressed graft to expand and conform to the defect when placed.
Hyper-Porous Scaffold for Bone Regeneration
The Zcore™ particulate contains approximately 88% void space, resulting from the natural cancellous matrix combined with intra-particle spacing created by the particle morphology. The reduced bulk density allows:
Increased available space for bone formation
Enhanced cellular and vascular infiltration
Stable osteoconductive scaffolding within the defect
Expandable Handling Characteristics
Zcore™ Expand is delivered as a compressed preformed sponge that expands almost immediately upon hydration. When introduced to blood or sterile saline, the graft:
Hydrates rapidly
Expands in diameter
Adapts to the defect geometry
The expansion allows the material to fill void spaces efficiently, reducing the need for packing loose particulate graft material.
Common Clinical Applications
Zcore™ Expand is frequently selected for procedures where conformability and defect fill are critical, including:
Extraction socket grafting
Ridge preservation
Lateral window sinus augmentation
Small contained bone defects
