Description

LOOK™ Polysyn™ sutures are a high-quality synthetic absorbable option made from polyglycolic acid (PGA). Engineered for predictable performance, Polysyn™ features a proprietary low-friction coating that delivers an exceptionally smooth, low-drag passage through tissue. These sutures maintain reliable strength through the critical early stages of wound healing and offer controlled, predictable absorption through hydrolysis.

Key Features

  • Exceptionally smooth proprietary coating minimizes tissue drag.
  • Predictable absorption through hydrolysis (non-enzymatic degradation).
  • Retains ~50% strength at 14 days and ~20% strength at 21 days.
  • Braided construction available undyed (clear) or dyed (violet).
  • Also available in violet monofilament configurations.
  • Consistent knot tying and dependable handling characteristics.

Absorption & Strength Retention

PGA sutures degrade primarily through hydrolysis, making their absorption pattern significantly more predictable than natural sutures such as chromic gut.

  • In vivo strength retention: ~50% at 14 days; ~20% at 21 days.
  • Mass absorption: Essentially complete between 50–90 days.
  • Oral cavity considerations: Saliva, microbial activity, and constant movement can accelerate breakdown, with a median survival time of ~15 days in oral mucosa.
  • Byproducts: Glycolic acid monomers, metabolized or excreted; may cause mild, transient inflammation in some cases.

While PGA sutures are widely used and highly reliable, their acidic degradation environment can in some cases be less than ideal for early osteogenesis or optimal wound healing in grafting procedures.

Material & Construction

  • Material: Polyglycolic acid (PGA), a synthetic absorbable polymer.
  • Degradation mechanism: Hydrolysis (non-enzymatic breakdown).
  • Coating: Proprietary low-friction coating for smoother passage.
  • Available forms: Braided (undyed or violet) and violet monofilament.

Common Dental Use Cases

  • Routine intraoral soft tissue closure
  • Periodontal and mucogingival procedures
  • Extraction site closure
  • Implant-related soft tissue management
  • General dentoalveolar surgery where short-term absorbable support is desired

Always exercise clinical judgment based on wound type and individual healing expectations.
