Description
The Hu-Friedy Steigmann Tissue Splitter knives are designed for soft-tissue splitting and layer separation in periodontal and mucogingival surgery. They are used for separating mucosa from the underlying periosteum, separating epithelium from underlying connective tissue, and splitting soft tissue for free gingival grafts and connective tissue grafts.
These instruments are used as part of a structured, sequenced soft-tissue separation technique, allowing controlled split-thickness tissue management, including in cases of thin biotype.
Description:
HF-TKSTEIG2 — Soft Tissue Splitter Steigmann, Modified Used to initiate periosteal splitting from the inside of the flap, beginning at the mucogingival junction (MGJ). The instrument is used to separate the periosteum only, to a depth of approximately 0.2–0.5 mm, using side (mesio-distal) movements.
HF-TKSTEIG — Soft Tissue Splitter Steigmann Used after the initial periosteal incision to separate mucosa from the underlying periosteum. The instrument is used with sideways (mesio-distal) movements, keeping the working end parallel to the bone surface.
Key Characteristics
Designed for structured soft-tissue splitting procedures
Used to separate:
Mucosa from periosteum
Epithelium from connective tissue
Different layers of soft tissue
Spade-shaped working ends
Sharp, angled blade design
Used in periodontology, mucogingival surgery, plastic surgery, and oral & maxillofacial surgery
Clinical Context:
The Steigmann tissue splitting technique supports:
Split-thickness (“mucosal detachment”) procedures
Tension-free flap positioning
Preparation for free gingival grafts, connective tissue grafts, and apically positioned flaps
Periodontal pocket elimination
Protection of thin marginal bone by preserving periosteum
