Description
Hu-Friedy Seldin Elevators are straight surgical elevators used to loosen teeth and root fragments from the periodontal ligament and ease extraction through controlled luxation and levering. The Seldin family includes a wide range of tip geometries and sizes to address anterior roots, molar roots, third molars, and deeply seated root fragments.
All instruments are manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and are intended for predictable performance in general and surgical extraction workflows.
Clinical use
Seldin elevators are used early in the extraction sequence to disrupt the periodontal ligament, develop mobility, and elevate teeth or roots prior to or instead of forceps delivery.
Common indications include:
Upper and lower anterior root removal
Upper and lower molar root elevation
Lower third molar extractions
Displacement of deeply seated root fragments
Design overview
All Seldin elevators in this family feature straight shanks and working ends for direct force application and tactile control. Variations in tip width, length, serration, and orientation allow clinicians to scale engagement and leverage based on anatomy and resistance.
Available patterns and references
E34S Seldin Elevator Thinner and narrower tip than the standard 34 shank, designed for controlled luxation in tighter anatomy. Available in standard handle, small handle, and serrated tip configurations. The serrated variant E34SSERR features a 4 mm wide tip for enhanced engagement.
E34 Seldin Elevator Straight standard pattern used for upper and lower anterior roots.
E2S Seldin Elevator Designed for lower third molar applications.
E1L Seldin Elevator Intended for upper and lower molar roots, left-oriented pattern.
E1R Seldin Elevator Intended for upper and lower molar roots, right-oriented pattern.
E3S Seldin Elevator Straight pattern used for upper and lower anterior roots.
E4L Seldin Elevator Smaller version of the E1L, designed for reduced access areas or lighter force application.
E4R Seldin Elevator Smaller version of the E1R, mirroring the reduced profile for opposite-side access.
E301W Seldin Elevator Designed for displacement of deeply seated roots, featuring a shorter and smaller working tip.
E304W Seldin Elevator Also intended for displacement of deeply seated roots, with a longer and larger working tip compared to the E301W.
Armamentarium placement
Seldin elevators are standard instruments in general extraction trays, oral surgery and minor surgical kits, third molar setups, and emergency root removal armamentaria. They are commonly used alongside luxating elevators, Cryer elevators, and forceps as part of a complete extraction workflow.
