Description
Heavy-duty surgical scissors built for cutting thick tissue, dense soft structures, and suture materials — where fine scissors aren’t enough.
Hu-Friedy Mayo Scissors are the workhorse of the surgical scissor family. Where Metzenbaum scissors are designed for delicate dissection, Mayo scissors are built for strength — heavier blades, more robust construction, and the cutting power to handle denser tissues and sutures without compromising control.

When to Choose Mayo Scissors
- When cutting sutures at or near the surgical site
- When trimming dense or thick soft tissue that would dull or stress finer scissors
- When a robust, general-utility cutting instrument is needed alongside more delicate instruments
- When working at surface level or in accessible areas where the straight or curved profile suits the approach
Choosing Your Configuration
- #3 — Curved, Blunt (HF-S3) — Curved blades improve visibility and access when working within a surgical site. Blunt tips reduce the risk of inadvertent tissue puncture. Preferred for cutting in deeper operative areas and around anatomical contours.
- #4 — Straight, Blunt (HF-S4) — Straight blades provide direct, predictable cutting action. The go-to choice for suture cutting and surface-level tissue trimming where a direct approach is preferred.
Key Features
- Heavy-duty blade construction — designed for thick tissue and suture cutting
- Blunt tips on both models — controlled cutting with reduced inadvertent trauma risk
- Curved (#3) and straight (#4) configurations — select based on access and cutting task
- High-quality surgical stainless steel — corrosion resistance and durable cutting performance
- Ergonomic finger rings — comfortable grip and controlled movement during extended procedures
- Hu-Friedy manufacturing quality — consistent performance and instrument longevity
Clinical Applications
- Suture cutting during and after oral surgical procedures
- Trimming dense or thick soft tissue in periodontal and surgical cases
- General utility cutting in oral surgery, extractions, and implant procedures
- Complementary instrument alongside Metzenbaum scissors for complete soft-tissue management
Note: Mayo scissors are intended for thick tissue and suture cutting. For delicate soft-tissue dissection, use Metzenbaum scissors to preserve blade integrity on both instruments.
