Description

Hu-Friedy Luxating Elevators are precision-engineered instruments designed to sever the periodontal ligament and gently expand the socket as the first step in atraumatic extraction. When used correctly, they reduce the need for excessive force, help preserve crestal bone and soft tissue, and create a smoother, more controlled transition to forceps delivery.

The EL Series supports evidence-based atraumatic extraction techniques commonly referenced in implant-focused dental literature. These instruments are intended to enhance predictability and tissue preservation, particularly in cases planned for grafting or implant placement.

The line is available in 2 mm to 5 mm tip widths, with straight and curved working ends. Select models are also available with Hu-Friedy’s Black Line handle, featuring a diamond-like carbon coating that improves grip, reduces glare, and enhances tactile control in wet surgical conditions. Instruments may be purchased individually or as a curated set of four popular configurations (HF-ELKIT).

Purpose and clinical use

Luxating elevators are intended for periodontal ligament release and controlled socket expansion, not heavy levering. They are placed along the root surface using apical pressure and gentle rotational movement to develop mobility before forceps are applied. Proper technique is essential, and clinical training is recommended to achieve optimal outcomes.

Common indications include:

  • Atraumatic extractions in anterior, premolar, and posterior regions

  • Thin buccal plate cases where bone preservation is critical

  • Extractions followed by immediate grafting or implant site preservation

  • Dense bone or tight periodontal ligament cases requiring controlled release

Instrument quality and design

Hu-Friedy EL luxators are manufactured with consistent tip geometry and precise working edges to deliver predictable engagement along the root surface. The balanced handle design promotes control and reduces hand fatigue during longer surgical procedures.

Key design attributes include:

  • Precision-formed tips for controlled periodontal ligament severing

  • Construction from Hu-Friedy Immunity Steel for corrosion resistance and durability

  • Ergonomic handle options, including Black Line for enhanced grip in wet conditions

  • Designed to complement forceps, not replace them

Tip selection guide

  • 2–3 mm tips are suited for fine access, anterior teeth, narrow roots, and initial release

  • 4–5 mm tips provide broader engagement for premolars, molars, and progressive mobility

Straight tips offer direct access and excellent visibility. Curved tips adapt more easily to root contours and improve access in posterior anatomy.

Recommended armamentarium placement

Hu-Friedy Luxating Elevators are a core component of:

  • General extraction trays

  • Atraumatic extraction and implant site preservation kits

  • Periodontal and minor oral surgery setups

  • Pediatric extraction kits, particularly 2–3 mm widths

Recommended pairings

For a predictable extraction workflow, luxating elevators are commonly paired with:

  • Periotomes or micro periotomes for initial crestal release

  • Extraction forceps once mobility is achieved

  • Root tip picks and fine curettes for fragment management

  • Grafting materials, membranes, and sutures for site preservation

A typical core selection includes 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm luxating elevators in straight and/or curved configurations, with a 5 mm option added for posterior cases. The HF-ELKIT offers a ready-to-use assortment.

Care and maintenance

Clean instruments ultrasonically, inspect for damage or wear, and sterilize via autoclave at 121–134°C. Do not sharpen luxating elevators, as this may alter tip geometry and void the warranty. Always follow Hu-Friedy reprocessing guidelines to prevent corrosion and maintain performance.

Warnings and contraindications

  • Avoid heavy levering to prevent tip fracture or root damage

  • Not indicated for ankylosed teeth or severe infections where alternative techniques may be required

  • Improper use may result in soft tissue injury; prioritize apical pressure over torque

  • Instruments are reusable but must be properly sterilized between uses to prevent cross-contamination
