Description
Hu-Friedy DeBakey Tissue Pliers are atraumatic tissue forceps designed for secure grasping and stabilization of delicate soft tissue while minimizing tissue damage. They are commonly used in surgical disciplines where preservation of tissue integrity is critical, including oral surgery, periodontal surgery, and implant procedures.
Models TP5090 and TP5091 are identical in design and function; the only difference is overall length.
Clinical Use
- Grasping and stabilizing delicate soft tissue
- Assisting with suturing and wound closure
- Tissue manipulation where reduced trauma is required
DeBakey Tip Design (Atraumatic Pattern)
- DeBakey tissue forceps are characterized by their atraumatic tip geometry, which features:
- Longitudinal, interlocking serrations rather than teeth
- Even distribution of pressure across the tissue surface
- Secure grip without puncturing or tearing tissue
- This design allows the forceps to hold tissue firmly while reducing localized compression and trauma compared to toothed forceps.

About the DeBakey Design
The DeBakey forceps pattern is named after Michael DeBakey, a pioneering cardiovascular surgeon known for advancing atraumatic surgical techniques. The DeBakey forceps design was developed to reduce tissue injury while maintaining effective control—principles that remain relevant across many surgical specialties today.
