Description
When standard coverage isn’t enough — the C-Sponge IV delivers expanded airway isolation in a peanut-shaped form designed for larger patients and higher-demand cases.
The C-Sponge IV (CSIV100) is slightly larger than the C-Sponge Regular, with a peanut-shaped geometry that provides broader, more complete throat coverage. It’s the right choice when anatomy, patient size, or procedural complexity calls for enhanced isolation beyond what a standard oval pack provides.
Like all C-Sponge products, it’s manufactured from highly absorbent polyurethane foam that maintains its shape when fully saturated — resisting migration, collapse, and fragmentation throughout the procedure. Sold in bags of 100 for high-volume surgical practices.
C-Sponge Family: Which to Choose?
- C-Sponge Regular — Oval shape, standard size. Best for routine cases with typical anatomy.
- C-Sponge II — Teardrop shape with integrated retrieval extension. Preferred when faster, more visible removal is a priority.
- C-Sponge III — Oval core with long, thin retrieval tail. Ideal when an unobtrusive tail that stays accessible without blocking the surgical field is needed.
- C-Sponge IV — Peanut shape, slightly larger. Choose when expanded coverage is needed for larger patients or full throat isolation.

When to Choose C-Sponge IV
- When the patient’s anatomy requires broader throat coverage than a standard oval pack provides
- When complete throat isolation is the clinical priority
- During longer or higher-fluid procedures where a larger, more absorbent pack reduces replacement frequency
- In complex maxillofacial or trauma cases where margin for error is low
Why Surgeons Switch from Gauze
- Gauze migrates. The C-Sponge IV’s foam structure and peanut geometry resist displacement even under active suctioning.
- Gauze collapses. Polyurethane foam maintains its shape when wet — no bunching, no gaps in airway coverage.
- Gauze fragments. The C-Sponge IV comes out as a single, intact unit — easy to confirm removal before extubation.
- Gauze undersizes. When standard coverage isn’t enough, the IV’s larger peanut form fills the gap without improvising with multiple gauze pieces.
Key Features
- Peanut shape — broader geometry for expanded airway coverage
- Slightly larger than C-Sponge Regular — designed for larger patients or full throat isolation
- Highly absorbent polyurethane foam — maintains shape and position when saturated
- Secure, non-collapsing design — reduces risk of fluid aspiration
- Durable foam resists tearing or snagging during rotary instrumentation
- Allows active suctioning without dislodgement
- Smooth, atraumatic surface — gentle placement and removal
- Autoclavable prior to use when a sterile field is required (plastic cycle)
- Easy visual confirmation before extubation
- Latex-free
Clinical Applications
- Oral and maxillofacial surgery in larger patients requiring expanded coverage
- Procedures requiring complete or enhanced throat isolation
- Longer or higher-fluid cases where reduced replacement frequency is preferred
