Hu-Friedy Markel Mouth Props are designed to help maintain a stable, open oral field during dental and oral-surgical procedures, including extractions performed under local anesthesia with oral or IV sedation.
Clinical purpose and use
Maintains mouth opening during sedation: In sedated patients, voluntary muscle control is reduced. Mouth props (also referred to in the literature as bite blocks or mouth props) are routinely used to passively maintain mandibular opening so the operator does not rely on patient effort to keep the mouth open.
Supports jaw stability and reduces strain: By holding the mandible in a controlled, supported position, mouth props help limit repetitive or excessive jaw movement during procedures. This is widely cited in clinical dentistry as a way to reduce operator-induced strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscles during longer procedures.
Improves procedural access and safety: A stable, open field improves access and visibility during extractions and other surgical procedures, and reduces the need for frequent repositioning.
Product features
Latex-free: Suitable for patients with latex sensitivity.
Sterilizable: Designed for repeated clinical use following standard sterilization protocols.
Sold as a pair (2 per set): Allows bilateral or alternating use depending on clinical preference.
Multiple sizes (MP48, MP52, MP54): Supports appropriate selection based on patient anatomy and required degree of opening.
Typical clinical indications
Surgical and non-surgical extractions
Sedation dentistry (oral or IV)
Procedures where prolonged or consistent mouth opening is required
Professional use only. Selection of size and placement should follow standard clinical training and judgment, particularly in sedated patients.
